Ecuador's mountainous landscape was worshiped long before the Incas invaded the country over 500 years ago. Although archaeological sites associated with the mountains are not spectacular and are rarely visited today, they were important prior to the Spanish conquest. After our expedition through the Llanganatis Range in 1980 (separate album), I made an ascent of Carihuairazo, a mountain neighboring Chimborazo, the highest and most sacred of the volcanoes in Ecuador. In 1987 I returned to Ecuador on a trip to the Galapagos (separate album) and visited the archaeological sites of Quito Loma (Inca fortress on Pambamarca Volcano) and Cochasqui (pre-Inca pyramids). Finally, after another expedition into the Llanganatis in 2008, I visited the little-known Inca ruins (Cuartel del Inca & Salitre) associated with two of Ecuador's most sacred & highest volcanoes, Chimborazo and Cotopaxi. Inca structures in Quito have long been covered or destroyed, but included here are a few photos of the city and some other images that might be of interest to some Ecuador fans (OK, also because I don't know where else to put them).
