Custom Hitch: The weakness of our OE hitch has been observed on various sites. Our hitch mounted Max. Swing-out STOWAWAY2 box was too much for the OE hitch. As observed by others, the anchoring of OE hitches, whether the now only available CURT Manufacturing 350# tongue weight as well as formally available 500# (formally available if camper diesel powered) to be inherently weak though aesthetically pleasing to camper’s designers in that hitch was “hidden”. The inherent weakness due in that not supported by longitudinal frame rails but anchored solely to frame rail end-plates. A couple of TRAVATO Owners FB page members have posted replacement installations. I had two off-the-shelf hitches tried: one from Dodge RAM as well as a ProMaster specific one from CURT. Proper installation found to be impossible due to all the RV paraphernalia @ rear of camper. My Winnebago Dealer referred me to a highly recommended welding & metal fabrication shop to create and install a replacement hitch. The shop felt enhancing the CURT Manufacturing OE to be ill-advised since it would still be dependent on end-plate support and there would be modifying OE equipment liability concerns . It would simply better to fabricate from scratch. The shop and the technician assigned to our job have a long history of fabricating custom hitches. I’ve posted 9 captioned images of the hitch creation and installation. Note that the remounted Max. STOWAWAY2 has never been so level.
